Redeemer Seminary’s education was designed to build upon itself. Classes were intended to be taken in a general order, with particular courses unlocking the rest of the curriculum. Therefore, Redeemer’s curriculum was not only the teachers and course content, but also the particular ways in which certain courses fed into each other. For instance, in order to be eligible to take classes on biblical exegesis, all students first needed to be able to read the biblical text in the original language and have completed several courses on the principles of engaging the biblical text. The majority of Redeemer’s preaching courses were advanced seminars focused on preaching from a specific biblical book. These were co-taught by either a local pastor or one of Redeemer’s homiletics professors alongside one of Redeemer’s biblical theology professors. Students were eligible to take these preaching seminars only after they had completed the corresponding exegetical class.
Redeemer Seminary’s primary degree was the Master of Divinity, which it offered from 2009-2016. It also offered a Master of Arts (Religion) degree from 2009-2014 (55 credit hours), that continued from 2014-2016 with three sub-discipline options: Biblical Theology (60 credit hours), General Theological Studies (56 credit hours), and Worship & Music (56 credit hours). The MAR degree followed the MDiv curriculum in a shortened and focused fashion.
From 2009-2014 Redeemer offered a Master of Arts degree (56 credit hours) with some courses from the M.Div curriculum and some general biblical interpretive courses specifically for the MA. This degree was discontinued in the 2014-2015 academic year in favor of the specialized MARs.
Redeemer offered several educational certificates: Certificate in Christian Studies (25 hours) from 2009-2016, and three specialized certificates that could supplement the M.Div curriculum with additional coursework. These were the Certificate in Worship & Music (2013-2016), Certificate in Anglican Studies (2013-2016) which was approved by several dioceses in the ACNA, and a Certificate in Baptist Studies (2014-2016).
Below are the courses that were required to complete a Master of Divinity degree from 2009-2014 (111 hours). In order to take Hermeneutics (NT123), students needed to first complete all the courses of either Greek or Hebrew and be at least in the final course for the other, have completed Text of the Testament (NT 101; textual criticism), and between the introductory courses to the New Testament and Old Testament (NT111, OT112) have already completed one and be currently enrolled in the other. Upon the completion of Hermeneutics, students were eligible to take advanced courses in New Testament (NT211, NT223, NT311), Old Testament (OT211, OT223, OT311, OT323), and Systematic Theology (ST313, ST323). In the 2014-2015 academic year the M.Div curriculum was consolidated to a total of 99 credit hours, with some electives being eliminated, other courses being merged, and some courses being renamed. The fundamental principles and content of the curriculum remained the same.
